We all know the words, aerobic, anaerobic, lactate, lactic acid, anerobic threshold and so on and so forth...but what they exactly mean and why they are important was never fully clear to me - I just had a rough idea what they stand for. But once you better understand their significance you can learn how … Continue reading Energy Systems interplay for runners

Date: 20 October 2019Distance: 25 kmElev. gain: 340 mGoal: rock itFinish: 1:41:57Rank: 1Shoes: Altra Lone Peak 4.0 Donnerlüttchen, it seems like those many kilometres of training through 2019 have worked! To be honest, I train (quite a bit) too little to usually play at the front; on the other hand, I train enough to easily … Continue reading Trail de Bruxelles 2019 (25k): Victory
The running dad
Becoming a father was an amazing experience but I did not want to accept that this would impact my running hobby too much - on the contrary: a little time out to disconnect from daily (and baby) stress, to center and sort your thoughts, and to stay fit and healthy for the years to come … Continue reading The running dad

Barefooting
Yes I do it! Not always, but regularly, usually at least once a week between 6-12km; and I would suggest everyone who doesn't have a serious reason not to do it, to do it as well (at least now and then). I'm not necessarily talking about barefoot-barefoot running (i.e., without any foot protection), but at … Continue reading Barefooting
ZUT Supertrail: Training
I am German. I am a friend of structure. I am a friend of training plans. For most of my marathon and half marathon preparation I used plans of the famous German Marathon legend Herbert Steffny. Some people also call those the Volkswagen of Marathon plans...good, reliable, working, but nothing fancy. And as such, it … Continue reading ZUT Supertrail: Training
Trail des Veneurs
A trip to the Ardennes for a nice little preparation race: Trail des Veneurs (42km, 1900m alt. gain). The field was small, around 100 runners for the longest distance of the first edition of this race (beside 16km and 32km). Starting line was on a cow paddock, still a swamp from the recent rain, perfect beginning for a trail run with wet socks :-).
ZUT Supertrail: Starting point
2018 was spiced with several races, with the training progress for each being visible throughout the year (graph below). Following the Munich marathon highlight, I trained towards a shorter mountain race in Spain 2 days before Christmas (14km, 500m elev). January was a rather shabby month but the decision for the ZUT (ZugSpitz Ultratrail) stood … Continue reading ZUT Supertrail: Starting point
München M 2018
Nice race through the english garden and the city of Munich with a great finish in the Olympic stadium. Unfortunately, not many spectators except for the HM crossing and city-parts. Water and food stations are ample and the post-run buffet is awesome (including free-tap alcohol free Erdinger Hefeweizen). With 100 EUR the price is a little excessive, especially considering that a race T-shirt would be another 40EUR!
